Ljubljana, Slovenia

Well, arriving in Ljubljana at the city train station, is somewhat under-whelming. Everyone who has been prior to me was telling me how beautiful it was… you won’t see it at the train station!!
A quick 10 minute dander and I was at my hostel, which was pretty good it has to be said. Decently comfortable beds, a good staff base and a fantastic location mad it the perfect base for seeing down town Ljubljana. Day one, was off down to the town centre to take a wee look about & get some nosh. Once you get into the Old Town, it suddenly becomes a beautiful place. The river through the centre is wide & with a healthy green appearance… and the Castle which sits on top of the hill (giving it a dominance over the entire city) is a pretty beautiful setting.
So having got myself settled in I decided to take a wander in the evening… took a few snaps managed to discover a shop which sold Horse Burgers (they were naff) and found myself somewhere to watch Manchester United v Barcelona in the second leg of the Champions League Semi Final. Unfortuanately, the Manc’s won, but you can’t have everything in life, can you?! Back at the hostel, in a prime example of why Hostels are great, a Mexican, an American and an Northern Irish man discussed the pro’s and con’s to having some family to crash with when travelling…
On my second day, I decided to follow a few of the recommended Trails in the book… up into Tivoli Park to see the Castle & a bit of the polite country park life which exists in the city. I also headed up to the Castle, where you can climb the walls & the clock tower with it’s fantastic 360 degree views of the city. Thankfully there was a cable car to the top of the hill on which the Castle is perched mind…
It was mid afternoon when the rain came along, so a quick jaunt back to the hostel & a quick doze, before bumping into an Aussie lassie called Ellie, who wanted to watch the football that evenign also. So out for dinner first, and I discovered that she was living off interest payments having sold her home at the peak of Aussie property prices. Truly a lady of leisure!! Lucky sod. So off to watch the football for a second evening, Chesea v Liverpool, also a CL S/F 2nd Leg. This time Chelsea win… apparently you can’t have anything in football this week.
On the way out, we discovered a lift with bouncers around it… Ellie, determined to know why, scammed us into the lift… to the 5th floor where we is discovered a roof top bar over looking the city, although still dominated by the Castle above. On a pretty mild evening, it was a pretty decent way to finish my last night in Ljubljana.
And so to 1st May, where most of Europe seems to close down… except the train station. So on to another train I jumped & on my way to Croatia, again, this time to stay.

About Mcfaggen

Having grown up in Co. Fermanagh where most of my family still reside, I thought it would be worthwhile to keep a blog of my travels around the rest of the UK, Europe and the World.
